Amy Norgard awarded a SAL Mini-Grant

October 8, 2021

Amy Norgard, Associate Professor of Classics, has been awarded a SAL Mini-Grant to support a hands-on approach to teaching Latin and Classics courses through paleography – that is, the study of old handwriting – in tandem with the study of rare books and manuscripts. Dr. Norgard will teach students to write Latin and English in secretary hand (a prevalent script used in 1500-1800s English manuscripts) with authentic period materials. The grant money will be used to purchase a classroom set of authentic Early Modern writing materials (chancery cotton paper, goose quills, and gall ink). Alongside studying paleography, students will work with book artifacts in Special Collections (e.g. Brant’s 1502 Vergil’s Aeneid) and digitized Early Modern manuscripts.
