United Speakers – Black History Month

United Speakers – Black History Month

March 2, 2020

United Speakers is constantly working to find creative ways to help the Congolese population of Kirksville expand their knowledge of the English language. As this month is Black History month they have been teaching lessons that center around the theme of African American artists. Junior, Taj Butler has been striving to create interactive lessons about influential African Americans, like Nina Simone, Maya Angelou, and Whitney Houston. By using their works, like “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou, Butler has been able to engage her students and boost participation. These lessons have a dual goal, to teach English and to also educate the Congolese community about important African American figures who they can relate to. This initiative by United Speakers is representative of their commitment to uplifting the Congolese community of Kirksville for many years to come.
