Havana’s Black Renaissance: Intellectuals and Artists of Post-Revolutionary Cuba

On Wednesday, February 26th,  Prof. Juanamaria Cordones-Cook (University of Missouri) will screen two of her recent documentary films, produced and directed in Cuba, on the topic of Havana’s Black Renaissance: Intellectuals and Artists of Post-Revolutionary Cuba

Diago: A Maroon Artist (2013) features the prominent multimedia Afro-Cuban artist, Juan Roberto Diago, who creates works of “cultural resistance”.   In this film Diago openly treats issues of race and poverty in contemporary Cuba, as well as their representation in his paintings and installations.   Discussion following screening.

Havana on Display (2012) examines the creation of art-object books, featuring the poetry of Afro-Cuban poet Nancy Morejón.
