File Formats for images

EPS – print

Encapsulated PostScript, or EPS, manages both objects graphics and pixel graphics. This File format is used both will Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. There are a number of useful functions in the ESP format for pixel graphics. Images can be selected with mask channels and the file format can store information about the halftone screen type and screen frequency as well as transfer functions for print adjustments.

+ Can make selections with channels

+ Can be stored with information about halftone screens

+ Safe, because it is encapsulated

–  Cannot be modified in the page layout software

–  File size is slightly larger than TIFF

 

TIFF- print

Tagger Image File Format, or TIFF, is an open image format for pixel-based images. The file consists of a file head and information describing the image content, size and how the computer should read the file – a kind of instruction manual for how to open image. TIFF handles line and grayscale images in RGB and CMYK modes.

 

TIFF +/-

+ Color, contrast and brightness can be modified in page layout software

+ Slightly smaller file size than EPS

–  Cannot Contain mask channels or halftone screen information

 

GIF – web

Graphic Interchange Format, or GIF, is a file format primarily used on the web. A GIF image is always in index mode, can consist of line as well as grayscale images and can contain anywhere from 2 to 256 different colors.

 

JPEG -  web

The most common type of lossy image compression method in JPEG. The abbreviation JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, after the group that designed that method. JPEG compression allows you to set the amount of information that can be removed from the image and thereby control the level of image compression.

+ Greatly reduces file size

+ Works on all computer platforms

– Removes image information

 

PDF 

Portable Document Format, of PDF, manages both objects graphics and pixel graphics. Photoshop and Illustrator can save and edit images in high-resolution PDF. PDF are commonly used because it combines the best characteristics of the EPS format and Photoshop, is better Standardized and can be read across all platforms.
