Exploring composition in relationship to structure and the visual organization of space is critical to the development of this exercise.

In this design activity, you will develop a grid structure based on content that will be provided by the instructor, and utilizing this grid structure you will create various layouts based upon parameters that will change and be added to on a daily basis.  These changing parameters will create an awareness of visual hierarchy.  The compositions will be evaluated primarily on the dynamic visual qualities of the space that create and organize.

“A visual hierarchy is an arrangement of elements in a graduated series, from most prominent to the least prominent, in a area of typographic space.  When establishing a visual hierarchy, a designer carefully considers the relative importance of each element in the message, the nature of the reader, the environment of forms within the typographic space.”

comment

• explore the relationship of space, size and the visual weight

• evaluate tone, texture and shape along with the eye movement within each composition

as you construct and complete them

• analyze the space and  form/counterform relationships within each examples you create
